The thing about just doing things

I've been thinking about this idea a lot lately, especially since my early 20s when I was cleaning glasses at a hotel bar in London. I was in this very junior role, but since it was a new opening, I was close enough to the VPs and directors that I could overhear their conversations. Instead of staying quiet, I would literally seek them out and try to absorb every piece of advice they'd share.

That taught me something important that went onto shape the trajectory of my life - most of the barriers we face are ones we create in our own minds.

Even now, I actively put myself in rooms where people expand my thinking. Whether it's through mentorship, finding friends who are doing incredible things (shoutout to one of my besties launching a skincare brand soon?!), or connecting with women who are where I want to be.

You don't have to wait for permission. No one's thinking about your life as much as you are, and no one's going to hand you a certificate saying "you're now allowed to do this thing."

You can literally just start.

The three scary things I'm doing right now

I'm saying all this as someone who's currently doing three things that are terrifying:

  1. Scaling Self-Made - We did a mini launch and had 150 people sign up. This is the first time I'm really taking something from idea to full platform, and it's both terrifying and exciting. I can't wait to scale this further and work on building the app that actually helps creators stop second-guessing every post. (You can sign up for a waitlist for our next launch here!)

  2. Growing Girls Club into a real media company - We've doubled our audience in the last couple of months and have some exciting partnerships coming up. It's been almost a year since we launched Girls Club as its own entity and it’s been such a great project, but to do this right, I need more infrastructure, more systems, and more help. I'm thinking in-person events, more resources, maybe even a longer-form podcast.

  3. Figuring out where I actually want to live - I'm torn between staying put in LA or doing some traveling for the next few months and fulfilling my dream of living in Bali and NYC for a bit. Even personal decisions require that same "you can just do things" energy.

But how do you actually do things?

I know saying "just do things" isn't exactly helpful advice. So let me break down how you can actually build the confidence to go after what you want:

1. Figure out what you actually want to do

This sounds obvious, but it's not always clear.

Follow what excites you. Pay attention to the things that give you that "I wish that was me" feeling. That's your intuition pointing you toward something.

Try lots of stuff. You don't have to wait for perfect clarity. It doesn’t happen. Put yourself out there, start posting content, and experiment. You'll figure out what sticks.

Put yourself in places that expand your thinking. Even if it's just following people who are doing really cool things on social media. They'll show you possibilities you didn't even know existed. I only applied for my visa after seeing other people go through the process. I only started a business because I saw others doing it. Proximity to possibility is everything.

2. Learn how to do those things

Once you know what direction you want to go, it's time for good old trial and error.

Take action before you're ready. Let yourself fail if necessary. That's how you learn.

Read books that build both confidence and strategic thinking. Here are three that have genuinely changed how I approach challenges:

Listen to podcasts. If you want to build a business, here are some of my favorites.

3. Build the confidence to keep going

No one is born with insane confidence. 99% of people really doubt themselves, but the successful ones just don't let those doubts stop them. Remember that everyone (and I mean literally everyone) is making it up as they go.

Reach out to people. I email people I admire all the time. Most people want to help if you ask thoughtfully.

Let your delusional alter ego take over for 20 minutes a day. I'm serious about this one. Channel the version of yourself that just goes for it, that doesn't overthink, that trusts she can figure things out along the way. Let them send that scary email. Apply for that job you're only 70% qualified for. Ask that person you think could be a friend to grab coffee.

Keep going when you're not immediately amazing. I’m looking at you, my fellow perfectionists. Everything worthwhile has a learning curve. The people who succeed are just the ones who stick with it through the messy middle.

You can just do things. The limit really is where you set it.

Your life can change dramatically in a year, in six months, in a single decision to stop waiting and start doing. The magic happens when you decide to just start anyway.

So what are you going to do?

That’s it for this week.

As always, thanks for being here! What's one thing you've been thinking about but haven't started yet? Hit reply and tell me - I love hearing about people taking action on the things they care about.
