[ON BRAND] I overcame my fear of public speaking
...+ how you can get better at speaking on the camera, on stages and tell stories that people are captivated by.

Hi there! Welcome back to On Brand - your weekly dose of actionable strategies and insights to grow & monetize your personal brand.
Let's talk about something I've been avoiding: speaking.
I've always wanted to do more than just post pretty videos.
I want to share my experiences, impact more creators and business owners.
But I was terrified of speaking publicly. Like, actually terrified.
I'd freeze the moment I turned on a camera.
I'd say no to opportunities that involved speaking.
When I did speak? I needed everything scripted sentence by sentence and would literally shake from nerves.
But I knew I couldn't build a career in media while refusing to use my voice.
Then everything changed.
I said yes to a speaking event that offered 6-hour public speaking prep.
It transformed how I show up online and in person.
I became SO much better at speaking, hosting workshops, even recording reels. The reel I posted after the training went viral-ish!
I sat with creators I admire (some with millions of followers) and realized I wasn't alone in struggling. Noone finds speaking comfortable.
We all have that magnetic energy that makes people pay attention. We just need to unlock it.
That's why we're hosting a FREE workshop with Tristan from Ultraspeaking this week.
He'll take us through the most powerful exercises to help you:
Become more confident speaking
Tell better stories
Sharpen your point
Dial in your magnetic energy on demand
Don't worry - you won't be put on the spot!
I'll demonstrate all the exercises (I’m really climbing the cringe mountain for you haha!) so you can sit back, relax, and learn.
Questions are always welcome though ofc! I’m so excited. This session was a gamechanger for me and I truly believe it will be for you too.
Now let's dive into the tips that helped me most...
In this issue:

Interesting things from last week
The best things we’ve read, watched and listened to.
Every creator and their mother was in Cannes last week and we’re still recovering from the biggest FOMO. Here’s a great explanation of why Cannes Lions is becoming the MET Gala for content creators.
This piece on the hidden cost of chasing clarity shook me in the best way.
Tyler The Creator & Instagram collab that we didn’t see coming but possibly one of the most impactful videos I watched lately? An hour-long conversation on creativity, letting go of fear and being obsessed with the things you create. Beautiful & will light a fire in you!

How To Actually Get Better At Speaking In Public (with some science to back things up)
The most crucial skill you can learn if you want to make an impact and be in a public-facing role is speaking.
Whether you're pitching investors, hosting workshops, working with clients or just showing up on Instagram - how you communicate determines everything.
Your ideas, your expertise, your vision? None of it matters if you can't share it confidently.
But here's what I want you to know. Charisma when speaking isn't something you're born with. It's a skill you can absolutely learn.
You've probably heard "just be yourself" or "practice makes perfect."
Can it work in some cases? Maybe - but it's pretty vague when you're literally shaking before hitting record.
More often than not you end up doing the same things over and over.
Still feeling uncomfortable on camera and wondering why nothing's clicking.
Most people aren't bad at speaking. But they're focusing on perfection instead of connection.
They're trying to sound like someone else instead of amplifying who they already are.
The truth? Every confident speaker you admire learned how to do it.
They weren't magically gifted with charisma - they developed it.
At that speaking workshop I mentioned, I learned techniques that completely shifted how I show up online and in real life. And it made me 1000x more confident about what I had to say and how I said it.
You can learn this too.
I'm going to break down the exact framework that took me from avoiding the camera to not being able to stfu.

Tip 1: Stories stick better than facts
People don't remember what you tell them, they remember how you made them feel.
When you hear a story, your brain waves actually start to synchronize with the storyteller's. Pretty wild, ehhh?!
That's why the most charismatic speakers aren't the ones with the most facts, they're the ones with the best stories.
Here's how to craft stories that stick:
Connect everything to your experience.
Always tie what you're teaching to something that actually happened to you. Don't say "networking is important". They probably know that. Tell them about the time you met your biggest client in line at Starbucks.
Use the 3-part story structure:
Setup: Where were you? What was happening?
Conflict: What went wrong? What was at stake?
Resolution: How did you solve it? What did you learn?
Be specific.
Instead of "I was nervous," say "My hands were shaking so hard I could barely hold my notes." Paint the picture so vividly that people can see themselves in your situation.
Some of our favorite online storytellers:

Tip 2: Get crystal clear on your ONE message
The biggest mistake I see (and was SO guilty of myself) is trying to say everything at once. That’s when you start to ramble and go off on a tangent.
Before you speak or create content:
Write down your core message in one sentence. What's the ONE thing you want people to remember?
Use the "So what?" test. After every point, ask "So what?" If you can't answer it clearly, cut it.
Create an outline. Even for casual videos, jot down 3 main points max.
Practice the pause. This is my favorite tip for when you are put on the spot. Before you speak, take a beat to organize your thoughts.
Record yourself. Brutal but works! Listen back and notice where you ramble - those are your editing opportunities.
Tip 3: Practice with zero agenda
You can't get better at speaking unless you actually speak. Most resistance comes from being unfamiliar with your own voice and face.
My 10-minute daily challenge I come back to over and over again (you’re welcome to borrow it!)
Open your phone camera while doing mundane tasks (making coffee, getting ready, etc.)
Talk about anything. Your plans for the day, a random thought, what you're cooking.
No agenda, no script. Just stream of consciousness talking.
Don't post it (or do!). This is purely for practice. You're just getting used to seeing and hearing yourself.
The adrenaline rush that makes you nervous also makes you more alert and ready to give your best performance. The key is getting comfortable with that feeling through repetition.
